The family is coming from Germany.
Five ways in which I can prepare myself to be culturally responsive:
1. Try to learn some words and phrases in German.
2. Look at books and videos about Germany
3. If I have time and resources, I could visit Germany
4. Do research on the internet about Germany.
5. Talk to someone from Germany.
I hope that having this preparation will make the child and family feel more welcomed. The child and family will feel like they are comfortable, appreciated, and that they belong. I want them to feel at home. This will also bennefit me by giving me knowledge I can use with other families from Germany in the future.
Crystal,
ReplyDeleteWelcoming a family from overseas is no easy tasks but you gave some good ideas on how we can help alleviate anxiety for the newcomers. You right preparation is key!

That sounds good. I used to have a child from Germany and he did not knew nothing in English. We needed to ask one of the executives to come and ask him or explain to him what he needed or if he can help him with something. We start to learn new words by looking at them throughout Google, but it was not the same. He lasted only six months, but we grew up to love him and he started to understand and speak a few words in English. I came one day to visit us and he say that he still remember us.
ReplyDeleteCrystal,
ReplyDeleteGerman is an interesting country and a hard language to grasp. Your five prep points are really great, liked how if you had time to visit Germany. My brother was stationed over their for several years and really enjoyed the people and the culture. I would probably have to you tube how to speak German to properly enunciate correctly.

Great post Crystal!!!!
ReplyDeleteI believe that we all behave in ways that reflect our culture. We should recognize culture differences such as holidays, foods, traditions, arts, music, clothing, etc. It is our job as teachers to make room for the cultures of others. We have to create a respectful and welcoming school environment. Student diversity challenges us to discover ways to bridge cultural differences.
